Defying the conventions of melody and harmony is a strategy The Milk Carton Kids have consciously embraced. The Only Ones, finds the GRAMMYÒ Award nominated duo performing a stripped-down acoustic set without a backing band. On The Only Ones, the pair returns to the core of what they are about musically: the duo. Through soft acoustic guitar picking and deftly accented trombone sighs, Hayley Heynderickx’s music immediately recalls folk music of the ’60s and ’70s mixed with a love of jazz radio. But Heynderickx’s singing—her vocals that range from sultry to operatic—belie a tenacity in her soul.
