SERAGLIO

SERAGLIO is a three-act folkloric ballet about star-crossed lovers in turn-of-the-century Istanbul. Seraglio disrupts the status quo of dance theater, setting a new precedent for story told through folkloric dance; Instead of classical European ballet, it is performed in Greek and Turkish dance.
It is a love story about a young Turkish girl and an immigrant Greek boy who fall in love, despite the fact that they are from different classes and countries that have been at war for hundreds of years. When their relationship is discovered, the battle between the cultures begins and the lovers are forced to face the reality that, not only is their love threatened, but their lives are in danger.
Like Romeo and Juliet or Tony and Maria (West Side Story), Seraglio reflects the age-old struggle of immigrants to assimilate and echoes the hardship of young lovers who bare the cross of forbidden love. With 40 dancers and actors, elaborate sets and a powerful score blending both cultures’ music, Seraglio brings all the power and passion of the two cultures of Greece and Turkey to the stage in a love story of the ages, told through the lens of the Aegean conflict.
