Alec Wilder (1907-1981) was a truly original American composer. Essentially self -taught, he did have a loose association with the Eastman School of Music (he was a resident of Rochester, NY). He wrote many popular songs from 1935 onwards which were performed , admired and respected by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Judy Holliday, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, etc. When rock and roll made his music obsolete he focused on small scale pieces for winds, written mainly for his friends he had met at Eastman, like oboist Mitch Miller who went on to oversee production at Columbia Records. His music incorporates jazz elements and the popular style in a classic form. Please join us then go out to lunch at some of the local restaurants near Trinity: Opal, Carlito’s, Trattoria Vittoria, Secret Bao, Empty Bowl Gourmet Noodle Bar, or the Crocodile Restaurant and Bar (where they have fantastic martinis, an Alec Wilder staple!
