Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara has created a beautiful program to share with the community from De la Guerra Plaza to The Arlington Theatre. Honor the Legacy of Dr. King and join us. All events are free! On Monday, January 20, the national holiday to honor Dr. King that was established in 1986, the Santa Barbara downtown will come alive. Kicking off at 9 am in de la Guerra Plaza with a diverse program of elected officials, speakers, and music; followed at 10 am by the Unity March from the Plaza up State Street to the Arlington Theatre for the emotionally packed program of song and dance, with awards for youth Essays and Poetry and Keynote Speaker Rev. James Lawson. Dr. Lawson, who worked with Dr. King in the turbulent times of the 1950s and 60s, will put the day, the man and the movement into his perspective. Rev. Lawson helped shaped the movement for civil rights.  He will deliver an eloquent closing speech for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Remembrance. Come hear from a man who witnessed first-hand the birth of a movement.
