Selah Dance Collective and Arianna Hartanov present BOLERO As a State Street Ballet dancer, independent choreographer, and Assistant Director of Selah Dance Collective, Hartanov has devised an evening of compelling and intricate choreographies performed by Hartanov’s peers at State Street Ballet and Selah Dance Collective. Regardless of one’s relationship to dance and live performance, this will undoubtedly be an evening everyone can enjoy. With a cast of 16 dancers, the titular piece Bolero explores the architecture of bodies in space together on stage. The score, composed by Maurice Ravel for the original 1928 performance choreography by Bronislava Nijinska, exudes a subtle and persistent rhythm that immerses the viewer in the movement of the dance. Another work by Hartanov, Take it as You Will, is designed to embody musicality through modulation, utilizing the dancers’ changes in quality and intention. For Night Out, Hartanov’s third piece for the evening, she compiled a swing-inspired score (including Carlos Santana, Django Reinhardt, and Yehudi Menuhin) which lets the dancers fly free on stage in a fun work that the audience is sure to love. Meredith Cabaniss Ventura, artistic director of Selah Dance Collective, will reproduce her dynamic piece Rogue Planets, danced by SELAH. Finally, two solos created by the adept and inventive local choreographer Weslie Ching add diversity to the evening.
