6th Annual Feed the Funk Benefit Concert
The Young Adult Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara is hosting its 6th Annual Feed the Funk Benefit Concert on Thursday, September 6th 5:00 – 10:00 pm at the beautiful outdoor venue: Pure Order Brew Co. (410 N Quarantina St., Santa Barbara). All Ages welcome. 5:00 Doors; 5:30-8:00 – Teen Performances, and 8:30-10:00 headlining entertainment with FUNKER AND A COOL. Feed the Funk is an annual Santa Barbara community outreach event that highlights the importance of educational development through music and performance-based art, as well as to support local teen arts and music mentorship programs. We are very excited to share that a special fundraising effort at this year’s Feed the Funk will benefit those impacted by the recent disasters in our community, and who are still suffering. Our Jewish Family Service (JFS) department has been working hard to provide relief in a number of ways, and we think it is important that we all continue to provide aid and assistance to those in need. JFS is excited to continue to team up with California HOPE 805 in helping to identify the continued needs of our community following the devastating Thomas Fire and Debris Flow disasters. HOPE 805 will have a presence at the event to help educate us and to interact with those present, to understand the continuing impact of these disasters. Your support at this year’s Feed the Funk Benefit Concert is more important than ever! We are looking forward to a super funky and meaningful event! We thank all the performers for sharing their talents in support of our important work. This year, there’s something for everyone! Led by emcee Louise Palanker, the Jewish Federation’s JCC Comedy Club will kick off the night, followed by Teen Star Santa Barbara, and starring for the first time – Musicology Santa Barbara, as well as Teen Sing for SB! From 8:30-10:00 PM, the venue transforms into a super funk party, featuring headlining entertainment funk pros Funker And A Cool! And, of course, we are encouraging guests to come dressed in their “funkiest” attire. Along with your craft beverage of choice, enjoy a variety of excellent empanadas for dinner by Buena Onda, a local favorite. Plus, pints of McConnell’s fine ice creams will be available. In addition to dinner, comedy, and music, attendees can further support local teen programs by bidding on silent auction items and experiences from local businesses, restaurants, wineries, artisans, and more. One lucky prize drawing winner will take home an “Instant Wine Cellar” including dozens of bottles of high quality wine from local winemakers. Funker And A Cool, the old-school instrumental funk band from JSH Music Productions, features local alto sax player Lito Hernandez, drummer/bandleader Jon Harris (UCSB class of 2000) and soul/groove vocalist Mama K, along with keys, electric guitar, electric bass, and percussion. This is the ultimate groovy, dance-able 60's-70's era instrumental funk vibe! (About) JCC’s Comedy Club has been strategically churning humor, making our locals face and sides hurt from excessive laughter for more than 10 years! The kids’ Comedy Club meets every Monday at 4pm at the *Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Center, 524 Chapala Street. Here kids develop self-esteem, abstract thinking and creative expression while learning to write and perform standup comedy from a seasoned professional comedy writer, community supporter and instructor Louise Palanker. We’d like to add that this is a free class open to any kids, teen through college ages. This year the JCC-CC will feature performances by long time participants, the amazing Jack Fischer, Nigel Robles and Isaac Babus. (this class is loud) (About) Teen Sing for Santa Barbara, Performing on behalf of 'Teens Sing For Santa Barbara', is Jackson Gillies. Jackson was the musical director, and one of the producers of the show. He has been living in Santa Barbara for 3 years, and has been involved in the music scene ever since he got here. In 2016 he won the title of 'Santa Barbara Teen Star', opened for Jim Messina at the Lobero, and recently gave a TEDx talk. Easily one of his proudest accomplishments is the work he has done for Teens Sing For Santa Barbara, and the Unity Shoppe. Over 100 people audition throughout Santa Barbara County to become one of the top ten finalists. Teen Star is a non-profit providing scholarships, supporting performing arts in our schools and showcasing the incredible talent in our community. Three top Teen Star singers will perform at Feed the Funk: Nicole Trujillo (TS ’18 Finalist), Benjamin Catch (TS ’18 Finalist) and Nolan Montgomery (TS ’17 Champion). They will be singing 2 group songs: “Gloria” by Laura Brannigan and “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles. Here is a short intro and bios for each of the 3 singers. Nicole Trujillo Nicole just graduated from Dos Pueblos High School. Nicole has an extensive theatre and choir background and has lead in numerous musicals, including the Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, Bye Bye Birdie, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She sings with the intent to instill beauty and joy in the hearts of everyone who hears her. Benjamin Catch Ben will be a sophomore at San Marcos High School and sings in the Madrigal and A Capella choirs. He was awarded ‘Outstanding Male Vocalist’ at the 2016 National Musical Theatre Competition of America and 'The Triple Threat Award' (singing/acting/dancing) by the La Colina Junior High Theater Program. Last fall, he played Paul Sycamore in You Can't Take it With You at SMHS and performed in the "Concerts Across America", a benefit to end gun violence. Ben is a singer-songwriter and plays guitar, bass and piano. Nolan Montgomery 2017 Teen Star winner, Nolan Montgomery, will be a junior at Dos Pueblos High School. He has been singing and performing since he was 3 years old. Throughout his life, Nolan has been a part of countless musical productions all around Santa Barbara. Some of his favorite roles include Harold Hill in The Music Man, The Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, and his most recent role as Mitch Mahoney in Spelling Bee. Outside of performing, Nolan loves to spend time with friends and family, playing the ukulele, and learning as much as he can about music. (About) Musicology Santa Barbara: Founder Erland Wanberg started playing the guitar and writing songs when he was 13 years old. Someone that had trouble calming his mind and sitting still in class, writing lyrics and playing the guitar was the canvas he needed to channel his energy, helping him in all areas of his life. Erland went on to tour the nation and worked with some of the best in the music business including Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness (Cecilia & The Satellite) and grammy award winning recording engineer Robert Carranza (Jack Johnson). After releasing his debut album 'On Our Side,' Erland's songwriting caught the ear of Songs Publishing, a Los Angeles/New York based music publishing company (Lorde, The Weeknd). The publishing deal prompted a move from the California coast to the music city - Nashville, Tennessee. In Nashville, Erland continued to grow musically and further developed his songwriting with creative opportunities to write and record many different genres of music for television and motion picture placement. Along his musical journey, Erland discovered his love and talent for teaching. For over a decade he has inspired students of all ages and skill levels to excel with passion and dedication. Many of his students have gone on to pursue their own musical ambitions as recording artists and performers. Erland decided to return home from Nashville with intentions to give back to the community that helped him get his start. In light of coming home, Musicology Santa Barbara was born. "Music has a way of connecting people like nothing else in this life. Although I am generally the teacher, I always learn something new from each of my students. I feel so blessed to be able to share my love of music through my profession. I can honestly say that I love my job." OUR GOALS: To connect community members to resources. To provide education surrounding common post-disaster reactions. To assist with review of recovery options and processes. To promote coping strategies. To support community members through difficult emotional periods.
