Incense Workshop

Participants will learn about the history of incense use and the ethnobotany of selected materials. They will “listen to incense” in an abbreviated Japanese ceremony (Koh-do) then create their own incense from a small buffet of ingredients. Participants will take their incense home to dry and be provided with a list of resources. All materials will be provided. Ethnobotanist Krisa Fredrickson’s ongoing research includes global scent culture, which allowed her to participate in the Shino School’s “first incense ceremony” of the New Year in Kyoto, Japan. A transplant from the San Francisco Bay Area, Krisa is currently working on customizing scents for clients’ rites of passage using ethnographic methods.
